Fighting General Daimos (1978)

Description

The third of the trilogy.

After the destruction of their home world, the survivors of the planet Barm head toward Earth with the goal of negotiating the purchase of land to emigrate to. Unfortunately, during the negotiations, the Barmian's leader, Leon, is assassinated by his second in command, Olban, and the delegation from Earth is framed for the murder. In the ensuing chaos, Doctor Isamu Ryuuzaki of the Earth delegation is shot and killed.
Shortly after the disastrous end of the talks, the Barmians (called "Valerians" in Starbirds) begin a campaign of terror against Earth, lead by Leon's son, Admiral Richter, who deploys a variety of "Mecha Soldiers" against the planet's defenses. The only thing standing between the Earthlings and annihilation is the transforming, karate-using super robot, Daimos, and its pilot, Kazuya Ryuuzaki. But that changes when he meets and falls in love with a mysterious girl named Erika, who turns out to be Richter's sister. Over the course of their struggles to reunite, Kazuya and Erika each learn that the other's people are not all evil... and that their own people are not all good.

	Kazuya Ryuzaki	The pilot of Daimos and the hero of the series, he was raised by Izumi after his mother’s death. After meeting and falling in love with Erika, he fights for the day when the war will end and they will be reunited, with his strong will of survival motivating him to be victorious. He is a karate black belt and champion (which helps battling the monsters, as Daimos has a system that makes it mimic its pilot’s movements). When he was 14 years old, he suffered a terrible accident, but managed to finish his rehabilitation successfully. He is also an accomplished drummer.
	Erika	The Baam princess, sister of Richter and the true love of Kazuya. Once a royal princess, while accompanying her father Leon and brother Richter to a council meeting with the earth forces, she witnessed her father's death, and, in attempting to calm Richter, accidentally caused Doctor Ryuzaki's death. Thus, to atone for the death of her father, she is working as a field doctor while Richter became the admiral for the Baam forces against Earth.
	Kyoshiro Yuzuki	Kazuya's best friend and pilot of the combat plane Galva FX-II. He's a fellow astronaut and an expert swordsman. As opposed to the idealistic Kazuya, Kyoshiro is a much more pragmatic person when it comes to war, but when push comes to shove, he will continue to stay and support Kazuya.
	Richter	General Lion's son and Erika's older brother. Richter loathes the Earthians for murdering his father during negotiations. He is in charge with the conquest of the Earth. Together with his generals—Balbas and Leiza—he is completely devoted to the task and loyal to the Admiral Olban, the current Baam ruler. He is ready to sacrifice everyone and everything for the Cause.

Fun Fact

• Series was originally meant to be 50 episodes, but TV Asahi (famous Japanese TV station) forced staff to reduce it to 44 episodes. In original scenario: The remaining episodes would have the humans and the Baam form an alliance, formally putting an end to the war. While Kazuya would act as a delegate from the human side, Erika would act as a delegate from the Baam side, being crowned their Queen. The Daimovic base would also help the Baam assimilate to Mars and make it their new home.
• In Philippines, the name Erika get up in popularity after the anime.
• Daimos oftenly appears in Super Robot Wars series together with Mobile Suit G Gundam, where Kazuya have a rivarly with Domon Kasshu because of their martial arts similarities. It appears more often with heroes from the Nagahama's trilogy but in a lesser number with them (A/A Portable, Alpha 2, 3)
